White review 11/15/2011
Had a lovely review in one of the NYC blogs The Connected Mom. "It began with the premise that children are intelligent and discerning audience members. It assumed they are perceptive and emotionally intelligent and compassionate creatures. My son left the play wanting to see it again. I left with a renewed love of the theater." Rob Weinert-Kendt has done a great article on the emergence of Baby Theatre in American Theatre magazine. I spoke to him last year when My House was playing at the New victory Theater in New York. I particularly love this quote from Tony Reekie in it: "... I wouldn’t want some of the people we work with to educate my children! But to tell my children a story, I can’t think of anyone better.” Dia:Beacon 10/13/2009
Yesterday, Rob and I had a day off so we got out of Manhattan for a few hours and went to a place called Dia:Beacon. It's about an hour outside New York and is a gallery for large scale contemporary art works, many of which are amazing. What was fascinating was that there were a small group of children, aged 1-4, who were also enjoying the works. Particularly one of four huge pieces by Richard Serra. It was collosal. It dwarfed the children...in fact it dwarfed everything. It was a huge piece of rusted metal wall. It was dark and shadowy yet the children were happily enjoying the space. Made me think about conventional materials for very small children. Thought it was interesting that the size and substance wouldn't be most peoples idea of what a toddler would enjoy, but this group were and suspect they are not unusual in that. "What interests me is the opportunity for all of us to become something different from what we are, by constructing spaces that contribute something to the experience of who we are." - Richard Serra You can see a couple of images of Richard Serra's works on their website: http://www.diabeacon.org/exhibitions/introduction/96 New York reviews of My House 10/08/2009
